Serotonin Sessions 001: Retrospective

Serotonin Sessions is a new series of events exploring how sound, performance and immersive creativity can have a positive impact on our mental health. Friday 12th November was the night it all began, as we came together at The Smokehouse in Ipswich for a night of music, community and connection.

First to perform was Fjorten and his cassette driven experimental soundscapes featuring recordings he had made of the everyday humdrum of life. As they came together, intricate layers of sound filled the room, hypnotising the audience and setting the mood for the rest of the night. It was wonderful to hear him retell the story behind the cassettes; after temporarily losing his sight and with a gig lined up, he needed a way of creating music without the full function of his eyes. The cassettes, cassette players and bold labels meant he was able to create, express and perform.

Next on the line up was French producer Flo/So. A set filled with vibrancy, percussive precision and electronic artistry. Performing in his distinctive blue boiler suit Florian’s sounds got half the room moving, whilst the other half became completely transfixed by his audio presence.

To end the night we had the incredible NUZU. The rap group did not disappoint, and the energy across the venue was maxed out by their performance. Made up of Jack (Producer), Kofi and Teige (rappers) their individual styles merge to form one distinctive sound. The narratives that unfold through their electronics and their words have real impact; and live these were elevated to an audience who were more than willing to enter their world.

A huge thank you to everyone that came along to Serotonin Sessions 001, it was wonderful seeing the room come alive with people. Thank you to The Smokehouse for being an awesome and supportive venue, and shout outs to the folks on sound and lighting, those helping with artist set ups, and everyone manning the bar. A massive thank you to Alexander Ward the official photographer of the night, the way he has been able to capture the night is stunning and all the photos you see here are by him. And thank you to our sponsors who are listed below, it would not have been possible without your kindness and support.
