Did You Know? by Lynn Kim
did you know? is a short animated film that explores shared sites of queerness between myself and the spotted hyena. The biology and sociology of the spotted hyena becomes a way in which to examine my own experience of gender and sexuality as a queer woman. Drawing from facts about the animal and my own intimate thoughts and personal observations, the film compares and contrasts the similarities and parallels between the spotted hyena and myself. Using scrambled text and a combination of live action and animated footage, the film invites viewers to scrutinize the image to draw both explicit and implicit meaning. In what ways do we understand gender? How is our sexuality identity visualized, seen, and recorded?
